Recipe: Sesame Seed Balls/Buchi

by - Saturday, May 05, 2012

This is a continuation of my red bean paste inspired food adventure. If you can recall, I made some homemade red bean paste filled manju cakes last week.  I still have enough red bean paste to use  for two more recipes and so I decided to make some sesame seed balls or buchi as they are called in the Philippines. This yummy snack is Chinese in origin and is a staple dessert item in our local Chinese fastfood restaurant.

Buchi are chewy, sticky glutinous rice balls filled with red bean or mung bean paste. They are shaped into balls and rolled in sesame seeds. They are then deep fried just like those Chinese New Year sticky rice cakes.

I adapted the recipe from here. Try making this snack for your next Chinese themed dinner party. It's easy to make and very tasty.

Sesame Seed Balls/Buchi

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup white sesame seeds
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 3 cups glutinous rice flour
  • Red bean paste
  • Vegetable oil for frying
Directions:

1. Dissolve brown sugar in boiling water.
2. Put rice flour in a bowl and make a well. Add the hot water and brown sugar mixture.
3. Using wooden spoon blend ingredients together until it forms a soft sticky dough.
4. Form dough into balls. Make an indentation in the middle of the dough ball with your thumb.
5. Fill with red bean paste. Seal edges and knead into a ball. Roll dough in sesame seeds.
6. Deep fry dough balls until slightly golden brown.
